Many conventional farmers were not aware of the importance of soil management. During a survey conducted among farmers, the persistent complaint was that in spite of providing fertilizers, the yield kept on going down. After engaging experts of soil management to educate the farmers, they were taught the importance of the quality of soil, regular testing of soil quality and measures to be adopted for correction in the deficiency in soil quality and even the amount of water required by each type of soil. Specific emphasis was given to the management of soil conditions using the appropriate fertilizers and the farmers were even introduced to the new vistas of organic farming.
Farmers were further introduced to soil testing bodies which they could utilize from time to time for analysis of the soil quality. The training was further given for the basic identification of soil types. The importance of preserving and growing trees along with the prevention of soil erosion was also made a part of the awareness program for farmers. Further, they were introduced to the types of crops suitable for different types of soil so that they can expect higher yields with the available resources.
