The incidents of suicides have been on a rising curve in recent years. Various reasons have been attributed to the rise in rates of suicide. Uncontrolled use of cyberspace, lack of communication among the peer group, the emergence of nuclear families having mechanical life and lack of time for socialization, the stress in the workplace, unnecessary pressure of education and performance on students, lack of adjustment between couples, nonsensical family sagas by the visual media and dangerous virtual games on the internet have been few of the main reasons for the increase in the number of suicides in our country.
Being a global phenomenon, 10 September every year is being marked as World Suicide Prevention Day. As far as our group is concerned, it is a continuous process throughout the year to sensitise the young minds on the repercussions of pessimistic thinking and also to guide them about optimism through life skills such as communication, problem-solving and decision making. We always try to spread the message that ‘Life is Beautiful’ to provide awareness among students through peer education. Regular counselling for senior students appearing for the Board Examination and distressing sessions are regularly conducted for the students from class six onwards.
